Common Chiropractic Techniques – What Are They?

Chiropractors use a wide variety of techniques to assist clients to a state of wellness. These methods may include exercise, nutrition, and massage along with physical therapy. The many types of hands-on therapies employed by chiropractors include the Gonstead technique and spinal manipulation, along with diversified and activator techniques.

Chiropractic Gonstead Technique

Named for Clarence S. Gonstead, this method involves a five-step process for evaluating clients as accurately as possible.

  1. Visualization evaluates range of motion or mobility difficulties.
  2. Instrumentation might include using a nervoscope that measures heat along the affected area that detects inflammation and abnormal nerve pressure.
  3. Static Palpation entails manually feeling the spine or other affected joint while in a fixed position.
  4. Motion Palpation involves manually assessing a joint during movement.
  5. X-Ray Analysis merely entails performing imaging studies in an attempt at locating disc or joint problems.

Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation

Often referred to as spinal adjustment or chiropractic adjustment, spinal manipulation involves using the hands to massage, mobilize, manipulate, and adjust joints by applying manual traction. Practitioners typically perform spinal manipulation by applying a sudden thrust designed to realign the affected joint back into its natural position, which improves overall range of motion.

Chiropractic Diversified Technique

After locating the misaligned joint or joints, the practitioner applies what is generically called a diversified movement, which involves a quick, precise action that causes realignment. While performing the high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust, a popping noise often occurs as the joint slides back into place.

Chiropractic Activator Technique

The activator method uses various instruments to perform adjustments, which requires less force than conventional manual manipulation techniques. One type of treatment uses electrical stimulation. By applying a slight electrical impulse along the affected joint or the spine, the action causes a type of spring action that encourages the joint to realign.
